Eastern Golf teams claim double win Tuesday at the JCPS Championships
Both the boys and girls golf teams won the JCPS Golf Championship yesterday.
The Eastern Boys’ Golf Team finally toppled Ballard in a dramatic final putt finish at the JCPS Golf Championship at Long Run Golf Course. The EHS Varsity Golf Team, comprised of two seniors (Hayden Groves and Xavier Mueller), two freshman (Danny Fleming and Christian Clements) and a 7th grader (Luke Bryant) gave a true team effort to secure the victory. Ballard claimed the 1st and 2nd place scorer spots while Eastern secured the 3rd-5th place winners. The two teams tied at 159 as the last golfers battled on the green with the final winning putt going to Eastern. Over the course of Coach Danny White’s career as golf coach at Eastern, the team had never been able to top Ballard for the JCPS Championship. Two years ago, a strong senior-led team missed by one stroke while still having the 1st and 2nd place golfers. Last year, the team struggled a bit after graduating a large senior class. With this freshman class of talented golfers, the Eastern Golf Team’s future is bright!
Coach Danny White said, “It was a great day for Eastern Golf. We won our first JCPS tournament and did it with a young team. Future looks good for Eastern Golf Team.”
This week the Lady Eagles successful defended there JCPS Championship with a team score of 181! Manual placed 2nd at 219 with Butler placing 3rd with 233.
Senior Matti Spalding shot 38 and tied for 1st. After the score card tie breaker she placed 2nd. Senior Grace Bryant shot 45 for 3rd place. 8th grade Emma Ballengee placed 6th with 48 and Sophomore Kayla Dermody placed 8th out of 20 girls with a score of 50. A great team effort!
Girls Golf Coach Dan Hartsock beamed after the victory, “We are super excited about our team of ladies efforts starting the 2020 season 7-0 in dual matches. Not sure about the team history but I don’t think the Lady Eagles have ever won the JCPS much less winning it in back to back years. Could not be more proud of there effort and hard work.”
Eastern Athletic Director Doug Wilham was excited to win the first JCPS Chmapionship offered in the 2020-2021 school year, “It’s always exciting to see our athletes bringing home championship trophies. These young women and men work very hard to earn these awards, and I am super proud of all of them!”
