Coed Varsity Track · Celebrating Spring Sports Seniors- Track & Field

The spring of 2020 will go down in the history books.  As coronavirus has changed life for everyone it had a particularly notable impact on spring sport athletes, with seniors suffering the loss of their final season of high school sports.  Many have represented Eastern HS exceptionally well over their careers as students and athletes.

Here is a thank you and celebration of our Eastern Spring Sport Seniors!

Track & Field

Coach Mike McCoy

“Seniors, I can think of many reasons to be sad from this devastating end of your high school career. On the other hand, I can think of how this unnatural situation reminds me of what a true education really is. This event will be a trademark forever. You may be teaching it 10 years from now.

My memories with this group will be how much hard work went into getting past our quitting point.  We were bonding as a team. I was really looking forward to watching us grow and peak this season. You all had the eye of the tiger. Pain and gain was not an issue.

I beg you to hold on to your hard working ethics on and off the field. You guys are blessed and most of you know it. I was blessed to be part of you all.

Hopefully we will see you soon. Thank You.”

Coach Mike Horan

“This group of seniors has made a big impact on Eastern Track & Field over the last 4 years.  I have been so impressed with how they have handled the challenges we’ve seen this spring.  They have remained hopeful, have been focused on the things they could control, and they have worked incredibly hard.  I am excited for many of them as they transition to collegiate competition and even more excited as they all continue their transition into adulthood.”

Other sports at Eastern: Cross Country

Favorite memory at Eastern: There are too many. I love my track girls, we would do the craziest things on distance and long runs. Before I took running serious we would stop at the playgrounds or at DQ during a run. That hasn’t been since freshman year but those were some of the best

Favorite Quote:  “You must expect great things from yourself before you can do them.” -Michael Jordan

How did you start in your sport?  I ran in Elementary school. There were once-a-year competitions for who could run the fastest mile and I always enjoyed being at the top. I loved to run and it was always fun for me. The love continued through middle school even though I didn’t take it seriously until HS

Thank you’s: I would like to thank Coach Horan for everything he has done for me from pushing me to my fullest to helping me pay for things to go on trips with the team. I appreciate everything he has taught me and coached me. I wasn’t as close to him in the first years of me being on the team but after a while, we got closer. When our girl’s teams had the ability to go to state and place on the podium for cross country he gave us his all. He always pushed me and made sure I was okay. I wish he will continue pushing future generations and always pour his heart into the young adults he coaches.

Favorite Quote:  “To give anything less than your best, is to sacrifice the gift.” – Steve Prefontaine

How did you start in your sport?  I started Track in Middle School after going running with my Dad all the time. He was the one who sparked my interest in the sport and who has kept me motivated throughout my running career.

Thank you’s: I would like to thank Coach Horan for being such a blessing to my life the past four years. I can’t thank you enough for pushing me, believing in me, and making me the runner I am today. Coach Lord, thank you for always being the most positive and encouraging person on the track. You were always there to make me feel better after a race when I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. Coach Bryar, your kind-hearted spirit has had such an impact on who I am as a person. This team is so lucky to have a coach like you to go to whenever we need to talk. And Coach Holden, thank you for being the best workout pacer and weight room instructor. You were the one who successfully taught me to do a correct push-up and for that, I am very grateful. This team and our memories will forever have a place in my heart. I would also like to say a very special thank you to my parents. Not only was my dad the one who first got me into running, but he has come to almost every single one of my races. In the absence of seeing his face somewhere along the track as he’d cheer me on, I would never have felt the extra push in a race to keep going. My mom was always there before I left for a race, to motivate me and let me know that I needed to give it all I had. Without her, I don’t know what kind of headspace I’d be in before a race! And lastly, I would like to thank my very supportive sisters who, even throughout their own running careers, they were always there to cheer me on – even if it had to be in spirit.
