On Monday February 12th 2018 the Eastern High School cheerleading team returned from their trip to the UCA National championship competition. For only the second time in the school’s history, the cheer team traveled down to Orlando, Florida to compete in the biggest cheerleading competition in the country.
This was head coach Tyra Anderson’s first year coaching and the team’s finish has her and the girls optimistic about the future. Two years ago the team went to nationals and placed 8th in the nation. This year the team had to first qualify for the competition in December, then on February 10th the girls competed twice: once in the pri-lims and once at the semi-finals once they made it. That Sunday, February 11th, was the final competition where only the top 27 teams competed, the girls put on a phenomenal performance that made the coaches proud. No one could’ve asked for anything more than what those girls left on the mat. This year the small varsity division 1 team brought home the ranking of 7th in the nation out of 68 teams! This was the last competition of the 2017-18 season, the last competition ever for the seniors on the team, and the season is slowly coming to an end with senior night being February 16th and the last game potentially being February 22nd.
Coach Anderson has said that this has been the most talented group of girls that the Eastern High School cheer team has ever seen, and this season has been one of the most successful seasons the organization has ever seen as well. Hopefully the team will continuously progress over the next few years in their talent and make an even better name for the Eastern Cheer organization.
