Eastern High School
Eastern vs. CAL Womenâs soccer
Eastern Womenâs soccer has had a rivalry with their biggest district competitor, CAL, for the past few years. Knowing the gravity behind this game, Eastern came into the game with high intensity and a chip on their shoulder after falling to CAL in the district tournament last year.
In the first half Eastern took a 2-1 lead. The first goal came from an assist by Arianna Mendez that split the defense and allowed Jasmine Simmons to run on to it and strike the ball in the back of the net. The second goal was off a ball that was cleared up the field, ricochet off the defense and Irie Snider won the ball and slid her shot past the keeper into the goal. With less than a minute on the clock CAL would score off a breakaway on a ball cleared from their defense.
Beginning the second half both teams reentered the game with high intensity. Around 20 minutes in, Arianna Mendez took the ball, made a move around the first defender, then drew in the next two defenders, and went on to split them with a pass that would assist Jasmine Simmons in a nice and easy shot on the ground that would slide right by the keeper. Eastern was then up at the score of 3-1. Unluckily CAL would have another two breakaways that resulted in two goals that would tie the game 3-3.
After a full 90 minute game and the score still tied, Eastern and CAL would have to go into overtime because in a district game there must be a winner. In the first half of overtime CAL would receive a penalty kick, however Eastern keeper Sydney Herman would block the shot and continue the game. In the second half of overtime with 10 seconds remaining, Arianna Mendez would win the ball on her defensive half, make a move to beat a player on the dribble and play a long ball up the field that would land perfectly in front of Jasmine Simmons for the assist that she would then take a touch and strike the ball far post into the back of the net for the game winning goal.
Eastern beats CAL 4-3 in double overtime.
